The housing trends here at ABAC are expecting a major shift coming Fall Semester based highly on the current economic and social shifts. It is important for students to understand what they may have to come to expect from their rapidly changing campus.
First, lets take a look at the population trends at ABAC. The total capacity of the dorms comes to a maximum number of 1,324 students that can live comfortably on campus. Currently there are a total of 1,271 students living on campus. Of this total, 463 reside at the Lakeside dorms, 448 live in the 100 building, and 360 take residence in the 200 building.
According to the Dean of Student Life and Housing, Bernice Hughes, ABAC is expecting a "full house" on campus this Fall Semester.
Every year a poll taken by the Student Life and Housing Department asks students who live on campus if they will be returning to the dorms the following semester. A poll taken last semester garnered a total of 269 students certain they would return. The most recent of these polls came back with a total of 350 students looking to return Fall Semester. This has lead the student life and housing foundation to expect a greater than average student populous in the near future.
Due to the ensuing financial crisis and signs pointing to further decline in the future, many students are opting to remain at ABAC instead of venturing out into this tumultuous job market. As shown by the recent poll, there appears to be a considerable increase in returning students.
With President Obama's recent challenge to high schools graduates to at least make an effort to attend one semester at a secondary educational facility, a college education is being seen as a viable option for more and more people looking to expand their career opportunities. The student population is expected to rise significantly because of these changing trends. Hughes even hints at the possibility of the population of ABAC on campus residents reaching and possibly surpassing 100% capacity here at the dorms come next semester.
