The ABAC women's tennis team defeated Young Harris College, 8-1, on Thursday, Feb. 26.

This victory was their first win at home for the 2009 season.

Prior to this match, the Fillies had defeated Central Florida Community College and St. Petersburg Community College, but had lost to Florida Community College and the University of West Florida, to start off their spring season.

Monika Lalewicz and Alejandra Gamboa teamed up to defeat their opponent 8-1, to get up on the scoreboard first. The duo of Calli Robinson and Chade' Scott soon followed beating their opponent also by a score of 8-1.

The Fillies doubles team of Jahyna Pope and Marley Myers played a long, strenuous match, eventually losing 9-7, giving the Fillies a 2-1 lead going into singles competition.

The singles portion of the event turned out to be equally successful for the Fillies as they won each individual match.

Lalewicz won her #1 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Gamboa defeated the #2 player from Young Harris 6-4, 7-5. Scott was victorious in her #3 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-1. Robinson won her #4 singles match 6-2, 6-0. Myers won her #5 match 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-6. Pope also was victories in her #5 singles match 6-4, 6-1.

"Everyone so far is learning and working hard," Coach Alan Kramer said. "Next week there will be lots of tennis being played."

The #1 player on the Fillies tennis team, Monica Lalewicz, has verbally committed to play tennis for Penn State next year after finishing out the season at ABAC.

"The Fillies are playing a tough schedule and competing hard against stronger competition in many cases.  This stronger competition enables us to work on and improve our games.  We can only get better and this will pay off as the season progresses," Kramer said.

The next home match for the Fillies will be held on Sunday, March 8, at the ABAC Tennis Center.
