The ABAC Music Department is gearing up for this fall with a lineup of various concerts and events.

The 90-member Concert Band is set to perform on Nov.. 19 at 7 p.m. The band will play two marches including John Phillip Sousa's tribute to collegians, "On the Campus" and the Spanish themed "La Sorella," which translates to "the sister" in Italian. The group will be playing the rhythmically energetic piece "Full Tilt!" by Richard L. Saucedo, as well as Jim Curnow's "Canticle of the Creatures," a tribute to Saint Francis Assisi who is known for his peaceful nature and love of all of God's creations. Members will also play the bluesy "Castle Rock" which will feature several student soloists.

"I like the overall sound of the band. It's a very mature sound," band director Woody Leonard said.

The Concert Band will perform for high school students on Nov. 20 in hopes of recruiting new members in the future. There will also be student music recitals on Dec. 3, 5 and 7.

The Jazz Ensemble recently held a concert with the Jazz Choir on Oct. 15 in the dining hall from 11:45 until 2 p.m. Their music this year features swing, blues, and Latin, as well as contemporary jazz,

"We've got very talented musicians," Jazz Ensemble Director Don Coates said.

Groups from the Jazz Program have also been planning to play at various festivals around South Georgia.

The Jazz Band performed at the Peanut Festival in Sylvester on Oct. 17. The concert was held in the park area at 1 p.m. Both the Jazz Band and Jazz Choir will perform at the Sweet Potato Festival in Ocilla. That concert will also take place at 1 p.m.

Concert Band Director Woody Leonard recently resurrected the Thundering Herd to play along with the Jazz Choir at the Sunbelt Ag. Expo on Oct. 22. The Herd performed popular and vintage songs including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Proud Mary." The Thundering Herd is comprised of around 35 members and will play a half hour show at the Expo.
