Recently, several of ABAC's music students participated in the Georgia Music Educators Association's annual all college conference.
This year the GMEA held their annual conference in Savannah, Georgia. Music program educators from a variety of schools across Georgia attended the event on Jan 29. Multiple ensembles performed at the conference, including an all-college chorus, band and orchestra.
Students became eligible when they were nominated in the music programs at their respective colleges. They were then added to a list of nominees from other colleges and chosen to participate in one of the all-college ensembles.
As its name suggests, the all college ensembles consisted of young yet very talented musicians colleges in the state of Georgia. ABAC was among many two year colleges such as Gainsville State that sent students to the conference. Not only two year colleges were among the institutions to send participants, but several prominent four year colleges were represented as well. These included Georgia Southern University, the University of Georgia, and even Georgia Tech.
"It's the best college musicians from all the different colleges and universities in Georgia," band director Woody Leonard said.
This year there were around 90 students to participate in the all-college band, three of which were from ABAC. Margaret Huckbea from Thomasville on bass clarinet and Tift County resident David Poole on clarinet performed in the woodwind section of the band. Tifton native Jake Thompson performed on trumpet and was first chair.
Participants from the ABAC choral department included Cameron Bell, Cody Jones, Cynthia Bivins, Brian (Opus) Holland, Spencer Argo, Scarlett Eirish, Ashley Willians, Tori Bozeman, Justin Lott, Raina Stephens, Michael Johnson, Erlencia Mumphery, and Ashley Shiver.
While ABAC is able to boast a successful band and chorus program, it does not have an orchestra. However, one student was able to participate in the all-college orchestra. Thomas Atkins from Hahira performed on the string bass.
